Grass Spider

In June 2004, I saw this grass spider in an azalea bush going after an ant.  The spider was not very large, maybe less than an inch long.  I have seen many larger than that.  This one  stayed still long enough for a closeup.  I had to shrink this picture to fit my webspace.  (72 kb. jpeg)

Grass spiders are very common and make a sheet web that tapers into a funnel hole in which they hide from predators like birds, etc.   I have dozens on my property.
