Home Grown Alum Crystal

I took a photo of one of my alum crystals that I grew several years ago. The penny is for scale. I tied a very small (eraser -sized) seed crystal onto a piece of thread and suspended it into a cooled supersaturated alum solution for a few days. Notice that the bottom is better defined than the top (because of density differences within the solution). This crystal is still hanging from the original thread. I had to grow the seed crystals and then select the best ones.
